Story - Discussing Vacations

Game Date: 4/20/2005
Location: San Francisco, California

Who: Knight of Saint Michael

What was usual was that there was a couple discussing a vacation. What was less usual was that Only one of the couple was taking a vacation and the other one would be left out. And Bridie was hurt and confused that William was taking leave of her. She'd never felt able to get past his inner defenses, and this wasn't helping.

"Do you have any idea of what you're doing?," asked Bridie. "Do you have any idea how much this hurts to hear that you're traveling on a non-business trip and you won't take me? Is that how you treat someone who loves and cares for you? Do you love me? Do you care for me? What do you think you're doing?"

William knew that he loved Bridie. He knew that he cared for Bridie. He felt Bridie's pain as he hurt her, but William knew that he must go on this vacation alone.

"I love you," he said. "I care for you," he said. "This is a vacation that I must take alone. I must sort things out. I must make things right with myself. This is a journey that I must take for myself by myself." William looked at Bridie with guarded compassion. "Have you never taken such a journey for yourself?"

Bridie stopped for a moment, looking thoughtful as she digested William's question. "No," she said. "I've never thought about it until you brought it up. But that doesn't answer my doubts, nor does it explain why you've waited until now. It's so frustrating to try and get close to you when you always hold me at arm's length." She ran her fingers through her hair in abject frustration. "I want to be close to you, but you won't let me and now you do this."

"I must do this," replied William. "At some point, you will need to make a, how do you say, solo trip of your own. But now, I must go because God demands it. I need to straighten things out."

William ran his hands through his own hair. He looked deep into Bridie's eyes. "I need you to be strong in this. I need you to support me. I need you waiting for me when I get back."

It took all of Bridie's strength to accept what William was saying because she had serious doubts he would ever let her inside her defenses. She had serious doubts he would come back. But a small kernel of faith burned deep within her. She decided, with fear and trembling, to have faith in William.

However, not knowing where William was going was more than Bridie could take, and William would simply not tell her, no matter how she harried and harassed him for the information.

William considered how upset Bridie had been while he was driving to Kansas. He hoped that she would be there when he got back from his vacation. He hoped he would be stronger when she decided to take her solo trip of self-recognizance. William never supposed for a moment that Bridie might not take one. He had just kissed her, taken his leave, and began his journey.

She will have faith. She will be there.

William heard these assurances, and then nothing more from his inner voice nor his family. He went to a car rental to begin his journey.
