Knight of Saint Michael
William stood in detention again, holding the spitball that had just been thrown at him.
He'd caught it out of midair after Lawton Grambling had thrown it at him. Lawton, for his part, was astonished that William had caught his spitball. No one caught his spitballs, not even his mother. Gene Shasky and Alan Chung were likewise stunned. Gene had planned throwing a pencil, and Alan a book, but they were frozen in amazement at this adult who could stop one of their attacks. William simply held the spitball in front of him, where he had caught it. He was taunting them by doing so. He was practically daring them to do it again.
They didn't disappoint him. Gene moved first, throwing the pencil, which William caught with the spitball. Alan threw the book, which William caught, throwing the spitball in the air, catching the book, then catching the spitball with the pencil in it with the book, pencil being perfectly parallel to the book, and the book being perfectly parallel to the ground. The Terrible Three were further amazed by this turned of events, and further enraged.
But they could do nothing about it, for they were out of things to throw.
They hadn't planned on being unable to overwhelm him. They had never been faced with a person that quick and self-possessed. But here William was taunting them with their lost weapons. He was unfazed, unflappable, and undisturbed. And he was still radiating that presence of righteousness. The Terrible Three thought they'd hated him before. Now they knew they hated him. But the feeling of helplessness was there for them again, for they couldn't do anything about him.
"We are here again today because of your behavior," said William. "You have been causing trouble in Ms. Donnelly's class again."
"What're you, her boyfriend?", asked Alan with a world-class sneer.
"I am," replied William. "So I am in a position to hear about your behavior every night. Your deeds are most impressive in the worst way. So now I will be monitoring your progress. If you are not good, things will be bad for you. If your behavior fails to improve, you shall reap the whirlwind."
The Terrible Three continued to radiate defiance. But inside they began to waver slightly because they were beginning to realize William wasn't going away. They suddenly noticed that he hadn't even rumpled his clothes in foiling their attacks.
Though slightly shaken, they began to devise other ways to attack him, or at least rumple his clothes.
Detention ended. To their credit, the Terrible Three didn't slink or sneak out. They walked out, continuing to radiate a fair level of malevolence. William for his part, continued to radiate righteousness, even when he used the phone in the teacher's lounge to order a wetsuit.
