Story - Around the World in 14 Days

Game Date: 10/9/2006
Location: San Francisco, California

Who: Eon (Lazarus)

It had been a little over 12 hours since Judah and Rebecca had landed in Paris. They rested since they had arrived which mainly consisted of Rebecca sleeping and Judah watching her while sketching on a pad in pencil. He never tired of seeing her form, it was like breathing for him. Morning finally came and she opened her eyes, Judah sat continuing to draw feverishly.

"Good morning, have you been up all night?" inquired Rebecca.

"Yes," Judah said continuing his efforts. Adding a bit of detail here and there, he finally stopped, satisfied with the finished product. "This is for you."

"It's amazing Judah, you really have a talent there, how did you do it so fast? It's wonderful!"

"Well I had a great subject to work with plus I don't have to sleep. It helps." Judah smiled sheepishly.

"You want to get some breakfast?" Rebecca asked, forgetting who she was addressing.

"Sure, there is nothing in the world that compares to a coffee in Paris. Why don't we get a shower and get some sightseeing done. It has been over a hundred years since I have been here. I hope that cafe I used to frequent is still open, they made the absolute perfect croissant." He noticed her looking at him. "What?"

"A hundred years, I have to admit Judah this will take some getting used to, I keep forgetting your age, would you mind sharing your memories about Paris? I mean it must be very different than when you were here last."

Judah reflected for a moment, "How about we discuss this in detail after you shower. We are burning daylight and I have so much to show you."

Judah extended a hand to Rebecca helping her out of bed. He gave her a warm embrace and a passionate kiss then playfully patted her behind as she hurried off to shower. Judah ordered room service while Rebecca got ready and after a quick bite they went out into the streets of Paris.

The morning passed as Judah and Rebecca strolled along the banks of the Seine taking in the beauty of the city. He recited tales from previous visits and various encounters with people of those times. It was a cleansing of sorts, one that he had waited for so long. They ate lunch at the cafe Judah had spoke of at the hotel that morning, the coffee was different but the croissants tasted exactly the way he had remembered them. Judah walked about the inside of the cafe showing Rebecca various details, on the back wall he noticed something that peaked his interest, a photograph. Walking back he studied the image with showed three men, two of which were very similar in appearance, obviously a father and son, the other was a tall man with long, white hair. Judah became absorbed in the photo, lost to another time and another face.

"Hey, where did you go?" Rebecca's voice brought him back to the present.

"Anyone seem familiar in that picture?" asked Judah as he stepped out of Rebecca way so that she could get a better look at the image.

Rebecca stared at it for a moment, "Is that you, with the hair? Well, of course... this is incredible." She looked at man who had served them and noticed the family resemblance to the two men in the picture, she asked, "do they know it is you from the picture?"

"No, I have found I try not to disturb too many people. Well let's get going, lots to see still." Judah reached up and touched the photo one last time. He walked out of the cafe and back into the afternoon sun.

They toured Paris, visiting the various spots he had been. He shared his recollections with her and was amazed at the new things that the two of them discovered together.

It was late when they sat down at a club a few blocks from their hotel. She ordered white wine and he a Martini. After about an hour of talking and dancing, Rebecca looked like she was beginning to wane. Walking around all day, jet lag and the alcohol were obviously having an effect.

Judah led her out of the club and flagged down a horse and carriage so that they could ride back to the hotel. As they rode, Judah looked at his love as she slept peacefully in his arms.

Glancing in the mirror on the side of the carriage, Judah noticed a man walking behind them on the sidewalk. Another quick glance in the mirror, allowed Judah to identify the pursuer as the man who had been following him in Brazil or someone who looked very much like him. It was the encounter in Brazil that had led Judah to return to the United States to seek the assistance of his old friend, John Battle and his associates, the Wardens.

Judah continued to observe the man in the mirror as he followed the carriage all the way back to the hotel. Once they arrived at the hotel, Judah looked back casually as his disembarked from the carriage and found nothing but empty streets.

Judah led Rebecca inside by the arm. She was clearly in need of a good night's sleep and would probably be paying for her indulgence in the morning. Judah gently laid her in the bed, undressed her, covered her up and gave her a kiss goodnight.

Once she was in the bed, he secured the door to the room with a line running to a lamp. If someone attempted to enter the room the lamp would be knocked over alerting him. Judah made his way to the window surveying the streets for the stalker. He found no sign that the man was there or if he was doing a good job of hiding. Judah propped a chair under the door handles on the double doors that led into the suite, then settled into a chair placed so that he could watch both the front doors and the bedroom. To pass the time he broke out his sketch pad and began to sketch a portrait of the man that had followed him. This time he would no longer allow himself to be the quarry, it was time to become the hunter. He had too much to lose, so much to protect.

The night passed without event.

A little before 8 the next morning, Judah removed the string to the lamp, took the chair from the door, called room service and ordered a full breakfast and a dozen roses. He waited for breakfast to be delivered before waking Rebecca with a tray in bed, starting with some ibuprofen and a glass of orange juice.

She woke with sleepy eyes and cobwebs in the brain, he handed her the pills and juice, "take these, you will need them." She took the meds and drank, after a couple of minutes the fog cleared. She smiled and began eating her breakfast with great enthusiasm, smelling the roses in between bites. They spent the morning together talking and he gave her a massage after she complained of tight muscles from all the walking the day before. After her morning shower, Judah told Rebecca that he wanted to tour the Louvre and she agreed without hesitation.

The day quickly passed as the sights were awe inspiring. It was fun but Rebecca could tell something was bothering him, "What's wrong Judah, you seem distracted like something is on your mind."

Judah smiled, "It's nothing really, just that it has been a very long time for me being close to someone. Sorry."

Judah looked at her with intensity for a moment and embraced her in a long kiss. "Let's get back to the hotel; we need to be ready to make our train ride tomorrow." The walk back to the hotel was quiet, the two of them lost in their own private world.

After seeing that Rebecca was settled in their room, Judah told her that he was going to the lobby to checkout and ensure that everything is in order for the next part of their trip. He went to the desk and asked where the business center was located. A staff member led him to a room with eight small office cubicles each with a sliding door for privacy. Once alone, Judah went to work, he scanned the image he had drawn of his pursuer, then composed an email to the Wardens with the image as an attachment.

Wardens,

Attached is a sketching of a man that has been shadowing Rebecca and me since our arrival in Paris. I believe him to be the same man who was following me when I first arrived in San Francisco last year. Please use this drawing to attempt to identify our pursuer. I have also included a copy of our itinerary in case we are missed.

I will leave the transponder to my communicator on but will leave the audio pickup off for now. If trouble occurs I will be in contact.

Judah

P.S. By the way, Paris is lovely this time of year. If anyone wants souvenirs please send a message.

Judah smiled and checked his account balance, when satisfied the funds were available he shutdown the computer. Walking to the front desk he made arrangements for check out and settled the bill. A car would take them to the train station in the morning.

Judah strolled back to the room and took time to explore various exits and entrances to the hotel. Arriving back at the room he found Rebecca in the middle of a bubble bath using the oversized tub. She was dozing comfortably; he slipped in the room silently and sat down on the vanity bench to watch her as she rested..

After leaving Paris, they spent a couple of days touring Normandy before going on to England. The remainder of the trip followed the same pattern as it had in Paris; the elusive stalker would appear briefly then disappear like a ghost. Judah at the insistence of the Knight checked in daily via communicator allowing security code and voiceprint verification while reporting in that they were safe.

By the time they were in the Caribbean, he had seen the tail seven times but never did the man make an offensive move and whenever noticed he seemed to vanish. Judah was beginning to not like the feel of this at all. The time spent was like a dream for the two of them with occasional breaks for reality when disturbed by their stalker. The choice of islands in the Caribbean turned out to be the right one, the stalker was never spotted there and it gave the two of them a very relaxing break before returning to San Francisco.

On the flight home Judah smiled as Rebecca slept on his shoulder. He had picked up gifts for his friends during the trip; Calvados for the Knight from a little shop in Caen, a small statue of the Tower of London for Amethyst, a well documented book of the history of Europe and England from authentic English authors for Karex, and finally for Delta-Vee a case of Southbury FC, a small club with colors that match the community center's, football/soccer jerseys for his cheer team with a coach's jacket for Randy.

They took a cab to Rebecca's place from the airport. They spent some time with each other before Rebecca started to doze, the time change obviously having an effect on her. Judah flagged down a cab and headed back to the base, as he relaxed in the back of the cab he looked back and caught a glimpse of someone ducking into an alleyway when the cab stopped for a red light. Judah watched as the cab pulled away and a few blocks down the road saw his pursuer waiting in a position near FSS Pier 13 that gave him a good view of the comings and goings from the facility. Judah arrived at the Wardens' waterfront vehicle facility at FSS Pier 13, looking about as he exited the cab he could find no evidence of the pursuer there now.

Judah keyed his communicator. Contacting security, he explained he and Dr. Miller had been followed and gave a brief description of the man. Judah requested that a security detail be sent to the doctor's condo to keep an eye on her. The officer on duty explained that security arrangements had already been made by the Knight and that a couple of two man teams had been dispatched to the doctor's, once your return to the city had been confirmed.

Judah disembarked from the Erne at the island and headed for his room. He was relieved to be able to use his own quarters again and began writing up a report for the Wardens on the sightings of his pursuer with hopes that the morning would bring allies and answers.

He sends an inquiry to the Knight copying Amethyst.

Knight,

Have you learned anything about the man whose picture I sent to you? I would like to use the base's computer to run a search for his identity but would feel better if you could lend me your expertise in this. It would appear my pursuers have found me again, or at least are sniffing around.

Also thanks for sending the security detail to look out for Rebecca. Since I am involved with her please let me know what you think would be best to ensure her safety, as my pursuers might try to get at me through her.

Judah
