Chasing Shadows, Part II

Silver Star receives a call from Rosa Hernandez. She tells him that she has been called in by the SFPD to look at a mummified body that the police had found. The investigating detective said that the body had been found in the SoMa area. She checked out the body and found that it had not been preserved using any of the mummification techniques that she was familiar with. When the results came back from the lab indicating that the mummy was only 55 to 60 years old, Rosa said that she decided to do a database search for similar cases. The only case that came close to matching her search query was the case of Rayo, the late member of San Francisco Central, who was killed in combat with the Darkling Entity. The appearance of the unidentified mummy was very similar to the appearance of Rayo' corpse.

Silver Star has Whitney do a search of for recent missing persons' cases in the SoMa area. The search returns eight possible disappearances. Six of the missing individuals are homeless that frequented or lived on the streets in the SoMa area. The other two are a newlywed couple that owed a loft apartment in the SoMa area.

Chris Hamilton gets a call from Lawrence Smith. Smith indicates that he is waiting for Chris in the hotel restaurant and could he join him for breakfast. Chris goes downstairs and has breakfast with Smith. During breakfast, Chris mentions his previous night's explorations and the destroyed storm drain grating. Smith says that he will have someone check into the matter.

After breakfast, Chris heads for Alcatraz to meet with the Wardens.

Silver Star calls a meeting to discuss the missing persons in SoMa and the possible connection with the mummified corpse. While the others are discussing the details of the missing persons cases and the mummy, Whitney reports that the police were called in to investigate the disappearance of a homeless man in the SoMa area. Eve realizes that the disappearances are very close to where she had lost Miklas' scent the day before. She tells the others that they need to investigate now and rushes out of the meeting room.

On her way out, Shadow Tiger bumps into Chris Hamilton who is with one of the tour groups touring the Alcatraz facility. He tries to talk to her but she runs by him. Blue Rose and Horatio Eon trying to catch up to Shadow Tiger, see Chris and stop to talk to him. He tells them about his encounter from the night before. After Shadow Tiger realizes that she is on an island and needs transport to the mainland, she calls for the Erne, the Wardens' Wing-In-Ground effect vehicle, to meet her at the dock. Blue Rose, Horatio Eon and Chris Hamilton go with her to the dock while Silver Star boards the Erne before it leaves its hangar. Once all are aboard, the Erne makes the short hop from Alcatraz to the Wardens' pier.

The group decides to take the Wardens' tactical van to the site of the disappearance. On the way to the site, Chris retells his story about his adventures the previous evening. Once at the site, Chris shows the Wardens the damaged storm drain grate.

Shadow Tiger hops down into the storm drain and starts investigating. Blue Rose tracks her at street level while Horatio Eon tracks her from the air. Silver Star stays behind at the van with Chris. He decides to determine if Chris is just a paranormal groupie or the real thing by throwing a punch at him. Chris easily evades the blow and asks if he had passed the audition. Silver Star gives Chris a suit of Alcatraz Foundation agent armor and blaster rifle. After Chris is geared up, the two hurry off to catch up with Blue Rose.

Shadow Tiger heading east tracks through the storm drain following a scent of the thing and Miklas which seem to be running in the same direction. The trail leads to an area just short of a storm water cleaning facility at the end of the tunnel. Shadow Tiger tells the others that she believes that she has found the thing's lair. Blue Rose, Silver Star and Chris join Shadow Tiger in the storm drain.

After everyone is in the storm drain, Shadow Tiger and Silver Star lead the way into the dark thing's lair. At the end of the side tunnel, they find a hole about six feet in diameter leading to the surface. Shadow Tiger hops up through the hole and finds herself in a warehouse. There are nine mounds of cardboard spaced throughout the empty room where Shadow Tiger had entered the warehouse. She checks one of the cardboard mounds and finds a mummified body. Silver Star joins Shadow Tiger in the warehouse. A large dark shambling figure throws a bale of cardboard at Silver Star and misses. Chris fires his blaster rifle up the hole and blows a hole in the roof of the warehouse. Blue Rose joins the others up in the warehouse. Horatio calls for backup from the FSS and the North Bay Wardens then descends to support the others in the warehouse. Both Shadow Tiger and Silver Star hit the dark thing without much effect. It fires a wave of energy at Silver Star and misses. The blast causes the area of the warehouse wall that it hit to rapidly age and corrode. Chris joins the other up in the warehouse. Everyone fires upon the dark thing scoring hits with little effect except for Horatio who blinds the dark thing. It charges across the warehouse, down the hole and into the storm drain system. Shadow Tiger and Blue Rose try to follow but give up as the noises made by the dark thing rapidly grow faint from distance.

Shadow Tiger returns to the warehouse. After a quick search she finds the body of Miklas. She takes the body and heads back into the storm drain before the FSS arrives on the scene. Shadow Tiger hides Miklas' body in the Wardens' tactical van.

The FSS arrives on the scene and the warehouse is cordoned off. The other bodies are gathered up and sent for analysis by forensic experts. Crime scene investigators are well as a FSS Special Operations and Support team gives the warehouse a through inspection. The FSS SOS team also interviews the Wardens. Silver Star informs the FSS liaison that Shadow Tiger was injured and will file her report from Alcatraz.

After the interviews, the others join Shadow Tiger back at the van and head back to Alcatraz. At Alcatraz, Shadow Tiger turns Miklas' body over to Dr. Rebecca Miller for autopsy and analysis.

A meeting is held and the North Bay Wardens are briefed upon the encounter with the dark thing. It is decided to set up patrols coordinated with the FSS and the SFPD's Silver Knights to find the dark thing.
