The Bonding

The girl that was attacked by Nekros is released by the FSS into the Wardens' custody. She is moved to the infirmary at the Wardens headquarters on Alcatraz Island. Dr. Rebecca Miller sets up a monitoring and testing regiment to determine when the girl will come out of her coma state.

Eve spends most every waking moment at the girl's bed side during the Thanksgiving holiday. When she tries to sleep, Eve is bothered by dark dreams. She is not sure if the dreams are from her past or a portent of her future. Eve starts spending less time sleeping and more time at the girl's bedside.

Marut comes to the Wardens headquarters on Monday to begin the bonding ritual between Eve and the girl. He takes a few drops of blood from both of them and places them in an iron goblet. He takes the goblet to Mandrake's old laboratory and chants an incantation over it. Each day for the next two weeks Marut returns. A few more drops of blood of Eve and the girl's blood are added to the goblet and more incantations are said over it. On the fourteenth day after the incantations are said, Marut removes to small blood red gems from the goblet. Each is placed into a silver bracelet. One bracelet is placed on Eve's arm and the other is placed on the girl's arm. Marut tells Eve that the bracelets are not to be removed and that the bonding ritual is done. Eve realizes she is very aware of the girl's presence even when she is not at her bedside.

The lack of sleep and the taxing nature of the ritual begin to take it toll on Eve. She finds herself sleeping more and is relived that the dark dreams have lessened in frequency and intensity.

With her new awareness of the girl, Eve starts spending less and less time at the girl's bedside. She does make it a point though to spent a couple of hours reading to the girl each night.
